Letters To The Editor ••••••••• '••••••••• Dear Editor; 1 have read the recent articles in your paper concerning the fatal shooting of “Blackie”. It is a de plorable thing when innocent ani mals have to suffer for no reason other than the heartless feelings of some people. We can very truly call a dog man’s best friend, but we often wonder if man can ever be called any sort of a friend to a dog. One can hardly believe such heartless people do live until an experience such as my two small children and myself had not so long ago. On the first day of July of this summer we were walking on a country road just out of the city limits and had the children’s pet dog with us. The dog has been a most unusual watch dog and pro tector for the children in our neighboiTiood. For six years he has guarded them and played with them and shared their joys and sorrows. He is a most valuable dog where chil dren are concerned. But as “Black ie” was not'suspicious of the han ger of innocent looking human beings, neither was “Butch ” As we calmly walked by a house a mother insisted that her 14- year-old child shoot “Butch” with a 22-rifle. When asked why such a deplorable thing was done, she very calmly stated the fact that they intended to kill every dog passing there. So you see we must have some protection for animals if we hope to spare their being killed without reason. Yes, the bullet did go through his body. He suffered plenty and was given every bit of care we could give him. The children even included him in their prayers. They have a love for Butch that is almost equal to his love for them. He didn’t die and they are so hap py he is able to play with them a gain. Yes, the children saw him shot. Saw the holes through him. The blood wasn’t easy to look at. But I think his living has kept their faith in people and God more strongly. May there never be another child in our community have such an experience. It isn’t good for the child and I honestly hope that that mother never has to hear her child cry and pray for a pet to live as mine did. Mrs R. W. Franklin Old Fort News Dr. and Mrs. J. H.
